Truth in Postcards & PFF

This postcard is actually this size. And it is a postcard, even thought it looks more like a bookmark. I've come across a couple other postcards this size before. The actual size is 2 1/8" x 6".

This one is from 1908, sent to Scotts Mills, Oregon (current population 355 residents -this has doubled since 1916!) from Roseburg, Oregon.

The greeting says:

I am back in the old place again, have been for little over a month. Have you and Eldon decided to stay where you are or go elsewhere?


I am disgusted with all in general,

to the beach

I am off for the rest of the week to the Oregon Coast. The place has no internet or tv. I am excited to read and stare at the ocean - although I may have withdrawls...

This is my first attempt at a layout with my old images. The background is a photo I took of the ocean in November.

seaside 1950

I was just recently having a discussion with someone about how there seemed to be a trend in the late 40's to late 50's of people putting their name in quotes. I think it was supposed to be their nickname, like Bob "Mitch" Mitchell or something like that. Sometimes you see that on gravestones. It make sense, people didn't know him as Bob, you have to put the "Mitch" in. But, the quote part of it seemed to very trendy for a while. I have seen my Mother's signature in her high school and college days as "Judi". She often put the quotes around it.

I got this photo at an Estate Sale at a house in the Hollywood District here in Portland about 4 years ago.


Seaside and Cannon Beach are towns on the coast, a couple of hours away. I love the idea of there being this photo booth where all the girls got their pictures taken and then they all signed them. You can almost hear the talking and laughter as they passed them around.

The signatures are hard to read now, but all the girls made sure to put quotes around their names.

Happy 150th Birthday, Oregon

Valentines Day also happens to be the birthday of the state of Oregon. Oregon the state is 150 years old today. You can find more sesquicentennial news here.

Although there are a few things I miss about California. I have never regretted moving to Portland. I love it here and the Pacific Northwest is ridiculously beautiful.

I bought this postcard over 10 years ago when I was living in Mountain View, California. I wanted to be up here. I would stare at it a lot. I love the way tinted photographs look. Something about it looks almost more real to me than color photos.


The postcard is postmarked August 1912 and is addressed to a Mrs JW Sackett, Anaheim, Cal.

It reads:

Dear Aunt,

Mother is still improving. Will let you know if any change. Have a dandy nurse.
