It Took Longer than Expected

Today I am sharing one of the many quirky and odd photos I have with you. Unfortunately there is no information on the back of this snapshot. I'm guessing it's from the late 1920's. And to me it looks like a woman, but who can really tell. Those feet are pretty narrow and small.

I wonder how this went for her/him. Maybe they became a famous magician. Maybe they struggled for 15 minutes and then had to ask the photographer to help them out. If it is a woman it makes it way more interesting. A short Google search doesn't bring up any women escape artists from this time.

I'm posting this today as part of the missing something theme with the blog Sepia Saturday. In this case a face is missing. As well as an outcome.

Visit the Sepia Saturday blog and you can find lots of other blogs posting vintage photos today.

  1. This must be a relative of the famous Houdini! To me, the shoes are men's shoes. But no matter what, I think it is a funny picture.

  2. I say men's shoes too. What a fun photo with a missing story. Darn!

  3. How intriguing. It makes me wonder if there was a series of photos showing the whole process. Or maybe it was unsuccessful so there was just one?

  4. Escapologist or has the dog wrapped him/her in the lead, slipped its collar and bolted?

  5. A mystery tied up within an enigma (as someone nearly once said). And a perfect picture for the Sepia Saturday theme.

  6. What an interesting picture, leaves you wanting to know the rest of the story. I also think this is a guy, his shoes are the giveaway. By the way, I like the name of your blog. So many people have special items and mementos hidden away in their cedar chests. Great choice!

  7. Okay, I'm thinking a woman trying to try on a new swimsuit at the beginning of the summer season. Some serious contortions go on in those dressing rooms.

  8. Well the answer to this escapes me! It certainly looks like someone practising his skills in the back garden (by the shed door) and asking a friend to record the moment.

  9. Quite an interesting pose. The the bottom half of the arm is missing too.

  10. Well, I hope whoever took this photo helped the poor guy (or gal) out of their predicament! I know I would NOT want to be in their shoes in a get-up like that.

Great blog title, by the way!

  11. What a great photo. Yes, those do look like men's shoes, but that doesn't mean anything, really. I've seen lots of women wearing men's shoes. The hair looks like a womans. I'm thinking it's a woman who's in love with Houdini and wants to mimic him so he'll take notice of her. I'm thinking he never noticed!

  12. Yes, Nancy, that's what I was thinking. Lots of women would wear men's clothes, especially while doing something like this. The hair is way longer than a mans would be, I would think. Thanks all for the comments!

  13. A curious and unique photo. I don't see a woman though, I think it is a man with longer hair suitable for the vaudeville stage.
